Landmarks in the History of Virgin Mobile Company
In November 1999, Virgin Mobile was officially launched as a private venture between the Virgin Group and One2One which became T-Mobile, now EE.
In 2002, Richard Branson was considering making Virgin Mobile a public business entity. In 2003, the company recorded its first annual profits after a successful sale during the Christmas season.
On 21st July 2004, Virgin Mobile started trading its shares. 37% of the shares were offered for sale while the rest was retained by Virgin Group. In the same year, Deutsche Telekom sold their 50% shares they had in Virgin Mobile to Virgin Group.
The agreement of the sale was that the mobile company would go public in 2 1/2 years after which they would receive proceeds amounting to 25%. The deal between T-Mobile and Virgin mobile turned sour forcing Branson to file a case against T-Mobile in the High Court.
In December 2005, Virgin Mobile UK announced partnership discussions with NTL: Telewest. This partnership would create a big business opportunity because the companies would be the first to merge broadband internet access, fixed-line services, mobile phone, and Television. Together they were going to create the first ever quadruple play media company. The deal was to allow NTL: Telewest free usage of the Virgin brand name. Richard Branson was to swap his majority shares of 72% in Virgin Mobile for 14% in NTL: Telewest. As a result, he would become the biggest single shareholders among all the partners.
In 2006, NTL: Telewest acquired Virgin Mobile after the mobile company's independent board of directors voted unanimously for the deal.
On 4th April 2006: NTL: Telewest acquired Virgin Mobile Company and delisted it from the London Stock Exchange
In June 2013 Liberty Global completed the acquisition of Virgin Media for £15 Billion
